Wedding Details Radio - Dr. Taffy Wagner Discusses Taxes and The Newly Married Couple

ANNOUNCER: Welcome to the Wedding Details Radio brought to you by WeddingDetails.com. Now here’s your host, Damien Allen.

DAMIEN: Good afternoon and welcome to Wedding Details Radio. My name is Damien Allen, and today we are speaking with Dr. Taffy Wagner. Good afternoon and welcome to the program, Dr. Taffy.

DR. TAFFY: It is great to be here.

DAMIEN: And a pleasure to have you with us as always.

DAMIEN: Today we are going to talk about taxes and the newly married couple and it’s tax time, what is the best piece of advice for a newly married couple can get?

DR. TAFFY: I think the best piece of advice I can give them is make sure they choose the correct filing status, and what I mean by that is either they are going to file a joint return or they are going to file separate returns. Married Filing Jointly means they are going to be combining their annual incomes, their deductions would be combined, expenses on that return. So they are more than likely to claim more deductions and that lowers the amount of taxes they have to pay.

DAMIEN: How can a couplebest set up their finances so that the tax season goes smoothly?

DR. TAFFY: They should get accordion files, I believe, where they are tracking everything they are spending their money on and keeping their receipts. That makes it very easy at the end of the year when they get ready to prepare their taxes, they can pull everything out monthly and say, “Ok, now I can make that ledger and begin to do the paperwork.

DAMIEN: Who should prepare the taxes for a newlywed couple? Should they do it themselves, should they hire an accountant?

DR. TAFFY: That really depends. If the couple didn’t have a lot of assets, I mean, if they are very newly married and they came in with not a lot of stuff, then they can do them themselves probably like the first couple of years, but as they start to accumulate houses, and assets, then I believe they should go to an accountant, because it takes away a lot of that pressure of oh my gosh did I remember everything, and now somebody else would be able to say, ...

GAL Radio - Ernest Svenson Discusses Technology and The Solo Lawyer

Announcer: Welcome to GAL Radio brought to you by the Greatest American Lawyer Blog. Changing the way law is practiced through technology, innovation and creativity. Turning the business of law on its head, and shaking things up to the betterment of clients, lawyers, law firms and society.

Damien Allen: Good afternoon, and welcome to GAL Radio. My name is Damien Allen and joining me today via the telephone is Ernest Svenson of the Svenson Law Firm in New Orleans, Louisiana. Good afternoon, and welcome to the program, Ernest.

Ernest Svenson: Hey, it’s great to be here.

Damien Allen: It’s great to have you. Congratulations on your Super Bowl win.

Ernest Svenson: Thanks. That was a long time coming and well-enjoyed. I don’t know about well-deserved, but we’ll simply pretend like it was deserved and the city is really, really enjoying it. It’s a great win.

Damien Allen: And it’s a great city. I haven’t been down there in a long time, but I have very fond memories of wandering around the city of New Orleans as a 20 year old and a street musician and just having a great, great time. But, today we’re talking about technology and lawyers. You, yourself, have your own law firm, The Svenson Law Firm. You’re a solo practice. What made you decide to go into a solo as opposed to working for a large firm?

Ernest Svenson: Well, I had worked for a large firm – the same large firm – for about 20 years after I finished my clerkship, my federal clerkship, and I really like the firm. The firm was great. They were pretty progressive. They gave me some latitude to try some tech stuff there and help promote and evangelize technology, but after Katrina, which, you know, certainly made it easier to look at making a change that previously might have seemed monumental, because everything seemed less than monumental after Katrina, I just decided that I wasn’t really happy practicing law. I didn’t think it was the firm. I didn’t know exactly what it was, but I figured I would just try and practice it on my ...

Wedding Details Radio - Sally Conant - Green Gown Cleaning And Preservation

ANNOUNCER: Welcome to the Wedding Details Radio brought to you by WeddingDetails.com. Now here’s your host, Damien Allen.

DAMIEN: Good morning and welcome to Wedding Details Radio. My name is Damien Allen, and joining me today on the phone is Sally Conant of Wedding Gown Specialists. Good afternoon and welcome to the program, Sally.

SALLY: Thank you for having me.

DAMIEN: IT is a pleasure to have you with us today. Today we are talking about going green. Is it possible to go green with wedding gown preservation? Is there something that’s carbon neutral? What are some of the things we have to deal with here?

SALLY: Well one aspect of going green in terms of gown preservation is to think about what solvent is going to be used to clean your gown. Some solvents in dry cleaning machines are more environmentally friendly than others, but the EPA has not declared any of them particularly green. The other thing you might think automatically is that, oh water would be green if you could just wash my gown in water that would be great, but unfortunately there are two things wrong with that. One is that water and silk don’t mix so if you let someone wash your silk gown in water, I think you would cry afterwards, because it really dissolves the things that make the silk shine and it also ends up causing a lot of crinkles that look like wrinkles after it is finished and it’s just not pretty. We get calls from brides across the country calling us and saying they took it to someone who washed it in a machine with water and then crying because that was not the right thing to do for their dress. So that’s one aspect of it. The problem with water as a green solvent is that it is not recycled and so while you might think automatically that anything in the dry cleaning machine would be less environmentally friendly than water, it really isn’t because the solvent in the dry cleaning machine is recycled and again you can ask your cleaner what solvent he has in the machine. Some of them are a little more friendly as I said than others. There’s one ...
